OTTAWA -- Jay Harrison scored the overtime goal, but he had to share the hero's role with Cam Ward on Thursday night.
Ward made 45 saves in the Carolina Hurricanes' 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators at Scotiabank Place. Harrison's goal came at 2:41 of the extra period, off an odd-man rush with Jordan Staal. It also completed a comeback for the Hurricanes for their second win in a row.
Alexander Semin scored on a power play with just under eight minutes left in the third period to tie the score. In the penalty box serving a delay-of-game penalty for flipping the glass was Daniel Alfredsson, who had put the Senators in front at 16:04 of the second with a sharp angle shot that beat Ward on the short side.
It was the third goal of the season and second in two games for Ottawa's 40-year-old captain.
A four-minute span of chaos culminated with Carolina's Chad LaRose banking a wrist shot in off the right post to tie the score 12:59 into the second period. The goal was the first of the season for the veteran winger.
Erik Karlsson scored the only goal of the first period, finishing off a pretty passing play with Zack Smith and Jakob Silfverberg.
The Hurricanes move on to play the Flyers on Saturday in Philadelphia. The Senators next host the Winnipeg Jets, also on Saturday.
NOTES: The first-period goal by Karlsson was the fifth of the season for the defending Norris Trophy winner. ... Defenseman Mike Lundin made his Senators debut after missing the first 10 games with a broken finger he suffered while playing in Sweden during the lockout. Lundin will be excused from Friday's practice, however, as his wife is giving birth to twins. ... Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller gave the goaltending start to Ward, despite the fact backup Dan Ellis shut out the Senators last week in Carolina. Muller said Tuesday's 4-1 win over Toronto was Ward's best game of the season. ... Former Senators first-round pick Tim Gleason played his 441st game for the Hurricanes, moving him into ninth place on the franchise career list.
