Hunter Mahan just had one of his best golf tournaments ever, winning 37 holes and conceding 17 throughout the course of the week to win the WGC Match Tournament in Arizona. Mahan began the tournament as the number 22 seed and his victory moves him up to ninth position in the world rankings.
The 29-year-old Mahan had to outscore some of the best players in golf to achieve the victory. His first conquest came at the disappointment of fifth ranked Steve Stricker, followed by the downfall of fourteenth ranked Matt Kuchar, and finally forty-second best Mark Wilson fell by the wayside. Rory Mcllroy ranked as the second best player in the world represented the final test to his ability, and Mahan pulled it off.
Mahan has improved with every tournament played this year, coming in twenty- fourth, fifteenth, sixth and first respectively. The ninth place rank he now holds officially places him in the same elite status as the other top names in golf.
Rory Mcllroy has to be the second biggest story of the WGC tournament. The 22-year-old golfing sensation has finished in the top five in each of his 2012 tournament starts. At an age when most young men are figuring out what their major in college is going to be, he is on his way to athletic stardom in an arena dominated by older players. He has gained the respect of every golfer on the pro circuit, and the admiration of the fans.
Rory hit his first hole in one at age 9, and became the youngest player ever to win the West of Ireland Championship, and the Irish Close Championship. Earning his first money from golf in 2007, Mcllroy has since compiled over 11 million dollars from the game.
Mcllroy earned his first PGA tournament victory before turning 21. A feat accomplished by only three other golfers. In 2011, he not only won the U.S. open, but also shattered the previous held record by eight strokes in the process.
I do not think it is too early to say that Rory Mcllroy is destined to become a golf legend. At his current pace, he is on par with another well-known golfing legend - Tiger Woods. With woods falling apart the past few years, Mcllroy might even take over the podium at some point, and stand above "he who once was king".
Golf is the major summer time sport here in Northeast Harbor. I've played each year here for the past decade. When I lived in Georgia, I had the opportunity to be a spectator at two of the Augusta championships.
