Huff replaces Gomez in Indians' rotation

The SportsXchange

The Cleveland Indians snapped their five-game losing streak Thursday night with a 5-4 win over the Texas Rangers. The bigger news for Cleveland came before the game, when manager Manny Acta announced a change in the rotation.

Acta said left-hander David Huff would replace right-hander Jeanmar Gomez in the starting staff, with Gomez being sent to the bullpen. The move wasn't unexpected. Huff has outpitched Gomez in each of his last two appearances, which have been relief appearances in games started by Gomez.

Huff will make his first start Tuesday at home against the Minnesota Twins. In his two relief appearances since being recalled from Class AAA Columbus, Huff has pitched six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk and striking out eight.

His return to the rotation brings Huff full circle since his one decent season in the majors. As a rookie in 2009, Huff went 11-8 and led all Indians pitchers in wins, although his 5.61 ERA was an indication that he was by no means a finished product.

That fact was reinforced in the next two years, when Huff was a combined 4-17 with a 5.39 ERA. He spent parts of both those seasons at Columbus. He opened this year on the disabled list due to a sprained right hamstring, but he was activated and optioned to Columbus in April, then remained in the minors through the end of August. He went 7-6 with a 4.97 ERA in 24 games (22 starts) in Class AAA this year before the Indians called him up on Sept. 4.

Huff's start Tuesday will be noteworthy for another reason. It will mark just the third game this season in which Cleveland's starting pitcher was a left-hander. Lefty Chris Seddon started two games in August.
