Howard open to deal with Lakers

The SportsXchange

Magic center Dwight Howard is open to signing a five-year maximum contract extension if he's traded to the Lakers according to multiple published reports.

The Magic and Lakers are zeroing in on a proposal that involves a third team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, who have the salary cap space to absorb a contract in return from the Magic if they also receive Lakers center Andrew Bynum in the deal.

The Magic want two things out of a Howard trade: to unload excessive contracts for Hedo Turkoglu, Jason Richardson or Chris Duhon and a bounty of draft picks -- but minimal salary -- in return.

Anderson Varajeo would be sent to the Magic, according to ESPN, and Orlando could receive as many as five draft picks.

The Lakers don't have first-round picks next year or in 2015. Those picks were traded to the Phoenix Suns in a sign-and-trade deal for Steve Nash.
