Hosmer hopes shoulder injury isn't a season-ender

Kansas City Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer's season certainly has not gone the way he had hoped or wanted.

It might have ended Thursday when he bruised and strained his right shoulder in the second inning while diving for Quintin Berry's two-run triple into the right field corner at Detroit in a game the Royals lost 5-4 to the Tigers.

Hosmer was replaced by reserve catcher Brayan Pena. Hosmer's shoulder will be re-evaluated Friday to detect the extent of the injury.

Manager Ned Yost said the preliminary diagnosis is Hosmer has a pinch in his rotator cuff in the back. Hosmer said he "just landed awkwardly."

Hosmer said he is sure he would not play Friday at Cleveland, but he is hopeful he could return before the season ends Wednesday.

Hosmer flied out to left in the second inning in his only at-bat Thursday. He is hitless in his past 18 at-bats to drop his average to .232. In his past 14 games, Hosmer has hit .093 (4-for-43) with only one extra-base hit, a double.

In 151 games this season, Hosmer has 14 home runs, 22 doubles and 61 RBI, certainly not what the Royals were anticipating after he hit .293 with 19 home runs, 27 doubles and 78 RBI in 128 games last year as a rookie.
