COMMENTARY | With a 13-27 record, don't look for New Orleans Hornets players to fill up the 2013 Western Conference All-Star roster. However, there are eight events at NBA All-Star Weekend and several Hornets could see action in these contests. Take a closer look at what Hornets could participate at NBA All-Star Weekend in 2013.
2/15: 8:00 p.m. CT: BBVA Rising Stars Challenge: Anthony Davis
You can take it to the bank that Anthony Davis will play in this event. With the Hornets rarely playing on national television, NBA fans outside of New Orleans are anxious to see Davis play again. The 2013 BBVA Rising Stars Challenge consists of two nine-man teams of NBA rookies and sophomores. If Davis is selected to participate, it would be the first time a Hornet has played in this game since Chris Paul took part in 2007.
2/16: approximately 8:00 p.m. CT: Taco Bell Skills Challenge: Greivis Vasquez
The 2013 Taco Bell Skills Challenge is the NBA All-Star Weekend event that showcases the league's best ball handlers and point guards. Participants compete in a timed obstacle course on drills, passing, and shooting. Ranking third in the NBA in assists, Greivis Vasquez could see action in this event. I remember Chris Paul having a terrible performance in the Taco Bell Skills Challenge in his last year in New Orleans.
2/16: approximately 8:30 p.m. CT: Foot Locker Three-Point Contest: Ryan Anderson
Ryan Anderson taking part in the 2013 Foot Locker Three-Point Contest is almost as much of a lock as Anthony Davis playing in the Rising Stars Challenge. Anderson participated in last year's event and as the NBA leader in made three-pointers, he should take part once again in 2013. The last time a Hornet was in this NBA All-Star Weekend event was 2008 when Peja Stojakovic participated.
2/16: approximately 9:00 p.m. CT: Sprite Slam Dunk: Al-Farouq Aminu
The days of NBA stars like Michael Jordan, Dominique Wilkins, and Vince Carter dominating the Sprite Slam Dunk contest are all but over. Although Blake Griffin recently won the Slam Dunk contest, most participants today are unfamiliar to casual NBA fans. In that respect, Hornets F Al-Farouq Aminu would be a perfect choice in 2013. Both Chris "Birdman" Andersen and J.R. Smith took part in the Sprite Slam Dunk contest as Hornets in 2005.
2/17: 7:00 p.m. CT: NBA All-Star Game: Greivis Vasquez
I think the New Orleans Hornets have a better chance of winning the 2013 NBA Finals than Greivis Vasquez has at being selected to play in the 2013 NBA All-Star game. But last year's Western Conference All-Star roster had four point guards and it's hard to argue that Vasquez isn't having one of the four best seasons among Western Conference point guards.
2013 NBA All-Star Weekend could be the showcase event for this young, exciting New Orleans Hornets roster to burst onto the national stage.
