Hope Solo’s Twitter Feud with Brandi Chastain: Fan View

U.S. women's soccer goalie Hope Solo started a Twitter feud with former soccer star Brandi Chastain on July 28. Solo expressed her displeasure with Chastain's announcing skills during the July 28 match and criticized the comments she made. Chastain has not responded to the posts on Twitter, but I think Solo's tweets have started to overshadow the U.S. win against Colombia.

    Hope Solo Reacts

The U.S. women's soccer team beat Colombia on July 28 with a final score of 3-0. However, goalie Hope Solo was unhappy about Brandi Chastain's comments about the game. Chastain is an official announcer for NBC at the Summer Olympics. Solo was not pleased with Chastain's criticism of defense and goalkeeping during the game, so she used her official Twitter account to attack her.

Hope Solo posted that Brandi Chastain should "lay off commentating about defending" and pointed out "the game has changed from a decade ago." Brandi Chastain is popularly known for her participation in the 1999 World Cup because she removed her jersey after making the penalty kick. However, Chastain also won two Olympic gold medals and one silver medal.

    No Reaction from Brandi Chastain

Brandi Chastain has not responded to the comments from Hope Solo on Twitter. However, this has not stopped Solo from posting more attacks. She added that Chastain's announcing deflects from the game and affects the experience of fans. Hope Solo has also wished that the Olympic Games had a commentator who "knows more about the game." She went on to indicate that she thought fans were using the "mute" button while Chastain was talking.

Although Brandi Chastain has not added her response to the Twitter attack, I believe the posts from Hope Solo have already deflected attention away from the U.S. team's win on July 28. Solo has always been outspoken, and her words have brought her trouble in the past. In 2007, Solo was removed from the World Cup competition because she admonished the coach. Her public criticism of Greg Ryan in 2007 jeopardized her entire career. It is not clear how Brandi Chastain or the U.S. team will react to her latest statements.
