High Point 80, William and Mary 69

Forwards Allan Chaney and John Brown combined for 37 points as High Point beat host William and Mary 80-69 on Wednesday in a nonconference game. Chaney had 11 of his team-high 19 points in the first half, and Brown scored 18 overall in the game in Williamsburg, Va.

Guard Devante Wallace added 17 points for High Point, which led by 14 at halftime. Wallace and Chaney are both products of basketball-rich Baltimore, while Chaney is a transfer from Virginia Tech.

Wallace hit a 3-pointer in transition with 8:11 to go in the game to give High Point a 67-48 lead.

Tribe forward Tim Rusthoven (20 points) cut the lead to 71-60 with 4:08 left. The lead was cut to 78-69 with 1:27 left on a dunk by guard Daniel Dixon of William and Mary, but High Point (2-2) held on with free throws.

William and Mary (1-3) made just 34.5 percent of its shots in the first half and was 3 of 8 from the foul line. Marcus Thornton, an all-CAA guard, had 18 points and three assists for the Tribe. Thornton has scored in double figures in 36 straight games.

Teammate Omar Prewitt, a guard/forward, came off the bench to score 12 points and grab eight boards.

High Point led 43-29 at halftime as Brown had 10 points. The Panthers hit 50 percent of their shots in the first half and then expanded the lead to 54-35 early in the second half.

William and Mary, coming off a loss to nationally ranked Wichita State on Nov. 14, will play Saturday at Rutgers. High Point, a favorite in the Big South Conference this season, hosts Wofford on Sunday. The High Point head coach is Scott Cherry, an assistant on George Mason's Final Four team in 2006.
