Hicks to call Notre Dame games on NBC

NBC was scheduled to announce Monday that Dan Hicks will replace Tom Hammond as Notre Dame's television play-by-play voice during home games starting this season, according to SI.com.

Hicks will work with returning analyst Mike Mayock. Hicks will also continue as the network's lead announcer for golf and Olympic swimming events.

"I think everyone at NBC had an inkling I was interested in getting back to football and when this opportunity came up, it was something I jumped at," Hicks said. "It's been great to make a name for myself at NBC, so to speak, with golf and the Olympics. But I'm really excited to carve another niche. For a play-by-play guy, the opportunity to call Notre Dame on a regular basis, an iconic brand, an iconic team, an iconic institution, was exciting."

Hicks filled in for Hammond for games in the past. He said he did not know how long the assignment will last.

NBC was also expected to announce that it has re-signed Hammond to a multi-year contract.

Hammond will stay on for NBC coverage of horse racing, figure skating, track and field and gymnastics, according to USA Today.

Hicks' first assignment is this Saturday when NBC broadcasts Notre Dame's annual Blue-Gold Game at 1 p.m. ET.
