On Sunday, October 21, 2012, the Hershey Bears hosted their second AHL game of the 2012 season. This time, the Binghamton Senators traveled to play the Bears at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The Bears had lost a home game against the Rochester Americans the night before and were looking to get a win in front of the home crowd. Unfortunately for the Bears, the Senators took the victory in overtime. It was a tough loss and it will hopefully help motivate the Bears to train hard during the next week to have a better weekend and to end October on a high note.
The two teams appeared evenly matched in the first period. Though the Senators had more shots on goal, the Bears were able to stop each one. Neither team got on the board in the first period and the two teams were tied at 0-0. Early in the second period, the Senators got on the board first thanks to Andre Benoit. Both Mike Hoffman and Andre Petersson were credited with the assist. The Bears managed to tie the score thanks to a goal from Jeff Taffe. Dmitry Orlov and Garrett Stafford were credited with assists. The period ended with the two teams tied at 1-1. When neither team managed to score a goal in the third period, the game was headed to overtime.
Overtime proved to be disappointing for the Bears. Not even five minutes into overtime, Hugh Jessiman hit the puck towards the net. A crowd of players managed to knock the net out of place. Upon video review it was determined that, before the net was knocked out of place, Jessiman had gotten the puck into the goal. His goal was the game winner. Benoit and Patrick Wiercioch were credited with assists.
The Bears will next play on Friday, October 26. The team will be traveling to play the Connecticut Blue Whales to start a three game weekend. Following the away game, the Bears will return home for two consecutive games. On Saturday, the team will be playing the Albany Devils. On Sunday, the team will be facing the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Though it is early in the season, the Bears could really use a win or two. The game against the Penguins will be the final game in October for the team and November will be a busy month. There will be fewer week long breaks and the games will be spread out over the week in the second half of the month. Hopefully, the team will be back on track next weekend and be able to get the team's first home victory of the season.
