Herrera confirms no Euro call-ups to El Tri

Mexico coach Miguel Herrera will not be calling the likes of Manchester United’s Javier Hernandez, Villarreal’s Giovani Dos Santos, or any other Europe-based Mexican player into his squad for the first leg of the playoff against New Zealand on Nov. 13.

“There will be no (further) call-ups at this moment,” he confirmed to reporters on return to Mexico City after Wednesday’s 4-2 win in San Diego against Finland. “We still have until (Nov.) 5 to decide on the second game.”

Herrera has consistently stressed the logistical difficulties involved in bringing in Europe-based players and, after seeing his domestic players last night, he believes the team has enough quality to get past New Zealand.

“The team is very solid, there isn’t any (Europe-based) player that can make a lot of difference compared to those that are here,” added Herrera. “They are all good players but the most important thing is making local conditions count.”

The former Atlante coach went into detail about the Euro-based players potentially arriving just four days before the first leg against New Zealand, having to adapt to the altitude in Mexico City and then traveling 25 hours to play the away leg on Nov. 20.

But Herrera did keep the door very much open to those plying their trade in Europe to be called into future squads should Mexico qualify for Brazil 2014.

“With the ticket in hand, we are sure we’ll bring them,” said Herrera.
