Buzzing on Yahoo Sports:

Hector Lombard Says He Fought Injured at UFC 149: Fan Reaction

Yahoo Contributor Network

A short while ago, many MMA fans considered Hector Lombard as one of the biggest threats to current UFC middleweight champion, Anderson Silva's, reign, but the former Bellator champ disappointed at UFC 149, putting on a lackluster performance against Tim Boetsch. "The Barbarian" ended up winning a controversial decision, putting an end to all talks about a fight against Silva anytime soon.

However, Lombard doesn't feel that his performance at UFC 149 reflects his abilities as a fighter, and he recently shed some light on why things went down the way they did against Boetsch.

"I want to let all my fans know. I fought [my] last fight injured," Lombard posted on his Facebook page. "I [wasn't] 100% sure but I [went] to the doctors... I have a fracture sternum with a torn cartilage, I got this [injury] in training for my fight with Tim Boetsch. I have to be out of training for 6 weeks I should never have fought like that, but I [didn't] want to let my fans and the UFC down, love you all."

Like many MMA fans, I don't really like it when fighters make excuses following a loss, but I don't think Lombard would make up a story just to get some sympathy. The Hector Lombard that fought at UFC 149 certainly didn't look like the guy that stopped six of his seven opponents while fighting for Bellator, making it easy to believe his story.

Even though I wasn't impressed with either Lombard's or Boetsch's performance at UFC 149, I did score the fight in favor of "Shango." I still think he's one of the top fighters in the UFC's middleweight division, and I expect him to fight his way back up the rankings.

Given the current middleweight picture, it definitely won't be an easy task.
