Spoelstra signs extension with Heat

Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra signed a multiyear extension with the Heat, the team announced Sunday.

The move comes one day after the Heat announced several front-office moves, including promoting Andy Elisburg to general manager and hiring Juwan Howard as an assistant coach.

Before signing the extension, Spoelstra had one season remaining on the contract he signed in 2011.

Spoelstra is 260-134 in his first five seasons with Miami. The Heat went to the playoffs each of the last three years and won the past two NBA titles.

Only 12 other coaches have won multiple championships and only seven others won consecutive titles.

The Heat had a 66-16 regular-season record in 2012-2013, winning 27 straight games at one point.
