Chiefs add Toub to coaching staff

The Chiefs’ LB corps got a boost in minicamp when LB Brandon Siler, who signed with the team last summer but missed all of 2011 with an Achilles injury, participated in his first practice — limited to individual drills. Kansas City was clearly confident in Siler’s recovery and ability to contribute, re-signing him in December.

Linebacker was a position some expected the Chiefs to target in the draft or free agency. They did neither, meaning Siler will likely have a role behind ILB Jovan Belcher. In the least, Siler will certainly help replace Demorrio Williams, who was cut in March. Williams was the Chiefs’ top reserve linebacker and a special-teams contributor. Siler was one of the team leaders in special-teams tackles each of his seasons in San Diego, including 21 in 2007.

There still isn’t much depth at the LB position behind stalwarts Tamba Hali and Derrick Johnson, but Siler’s return gives the Chiefs a player with starting experience to join Andy Studebaker on the unit’s second team.
