Warriors DUI Arrest Could Turn Ugly

Three weeks ago, the University of Hawaii's star punter Alex Dunnachie was arrested for suspicion of drunken driving early Saturday morning on July 7th. This was after head coach Norm Chow had told the team under no uncertain terms that, "this will not happen again". (source - KITV)

Circumventing the coach?

Now, Dunnachie has come back with his own declaration from his lawyer, Paul Cunney: "I would hope that the coach could come up with creative ways (other than a suspension) to discipline him." (Source - Star-Advertiser) To be clear, Warrior coach Chow has not yet officially meted out any punishment for Dunnachie.

Dunnachie is to appear in court for his drunken driving accusation on August 3rd. However, the team begins fall camp on August 1st with practice beginning the next day.

Furthermore, Cunney feels due process isn't being followed and stated in a letter to interim Athletic Director Rocky Freitas: "I am requesting a meeting with you as soon as possible to prevent Coach (Norm) Chow from suspending Alex Dunnachie after he appears in Honolulu District Court on Friday Aug. 3, which would violate the code of conduct of the student athlete."

Dunnachie is the third football player to be arrested for DUI this year. In March, fourth-year junior quarterback Cayman Shutter was arrested for driving under the influence and then a month or so ago, backup fourth-year junior linebacker Reid Tachibana was arrested for the same violation. Shutter has since pled no contest and was suspended by head coach Norm Chow for the first four games of the upcoming 2012 season.

College career over?

He's a senior, but Dunnachie theoretically could come back to use his redshirt in 2013 as a fifth-year senior. The Australian is 6'4" 220 pounds and originally played Australian Rules Football before coming to the States. It's thought that Dunnachie, who is one of Hawaii's best pro prospects, could be suspended for the entire year - possibly ending Dunnachie's college career (source - KHNL).

Said Cunney: "The ideal is that Alex goes back to the team. He reports on August first, and he's part of the team."

A perusal of responses within the news sources forums would suggest the fans are on the schools side. It remains to be seen.
