Hartford's John Peterson had 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Hawks held off Maryland-Baltimore County for a 68-56 win Thursday in West Hartford, Conn.
Hartford (16-12, 9-6 America East) trailed just 24-20 at halftime, despite making just two 2-point field goals in the first half. The Hawks opened the second half on a 17-6 run to take a 37-30 lead, and extended the lead to 14 points before holding on for the win. The Hawks shot 40 percent in the game after the rough start.
Ryan Cook had 16 points and seven rebounds to lead the Retrievers (6-22, 4-11) while Chase Plummer added 15 points and seven rebounds before fouling out. The Retrievers shot just 38 percent from the field (19 of 50).
After scoring the first basket, Hartford went on a 10-2 run before Maryland-Baltimore County scored the next five points to close to within 10-9 with 11:42 in the first half.
The Retrievers went on a nine-point run to lead by nine before the Hawks picked up the next seven points to close to within 21-19 with 3:39 in the half.
