Happ hospitalized after getting hit in head by liner

The SportsXchange

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher J.A. Happ was transported to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Fla., after being struck in the head by a Desmond Jennings line drive in the second inning Tuesday night.

Happ crumbled to the ground clutching his temple -- he appeared to be bleeding -- as the rolled down the first base line.

Catcher J.P. Arencibia began gesturing emphatically for medical staff before the play was over, and medical personnel rushed for the mound as players -- many apparently welling with tears -- kneeled nearby.

Jennings, who ran the bases clutching his helmet in dismay, stood on third base with his uniform shirt in his mouth, gazing at the scene.

Happ was removed in a head brace on a stretcher after 11 minutes and appeared to be gesturing and speaking with paramedics.

The left-hander began the night 2-2 with a 3.96 ERA in six starts this season. He was acquired by the Blue Jays from the Astros last summer in a multi-player trade that sent reliever Francisco Cordero to Houston.
