Hanrahan has Tommy John surgery

The SportsXchange

Boston Red Sox reliever Joel Hanrahan underwent surgery on his right elbow and forearm and had bone spurs removed Thursday.

Dr. James Andrews performed Tommy John surgery on the ulnar collateral ligament in Hanrahan's elbow and also repaired the flexor tendon in his right forearm, agent Mike Dillon said.

The normal recovery time from Tommy John surgery is one year, meaning Hanrahan might not be recovered for the start of next season.

Hanrahan, acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the offseason to be the Red Sox's closer, was 0-1 with four saves and a 9.82 ERA in nine appearances. The 31-year-old becomes a free agent after the season.
