The San Jose Sharks re-signed veteran defenseman Scott Hannan to a one-year, $1 million contract on Thursday.

The 35-year-old played in 56 regular-season games last season for the Sharks and had three goals and 12 points. He added two assists in seven playoff games.

"Scott is a high-character, veteran player who leads by example," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. "He understands and accepts his role based on the needs of our team and will be a great mentor for many of the younger players on our roster."

Hannan spent the first eight years of his career with the Sharks before moving on to the Colorado Avalanche, Washington Capitals, Calgary Flames and Nashville Predators before returning to San Jose.

"I'm going to come into the year and coming here with the anticipation of playing and we'll see where it goes from there," Hannan said of the 2014-15 season. "I'm willing to help out any way I can to move this team forward and get to that ultimate goal and I think we have a great shot at winning this year for everything and every reason."

In 997 career NHL games, Hannan has 36 goals and 174 assists during the regular season.
