Deron Powers and Du'Vaughn Maxwell each scored 17 points as Hampton outlasted a weary James Madison team to earn a 69-65 victory and end its three-game losing streak. The Pirates (3-10), who hadn't won since Dec. 18, led 61-47 after a Deron Powers three-pointer with 4:20 to play, but got careless with the basketball down the stretch. A 14-2 run over the next 2:16 got the Dukes (7-8) within a basket, but Ramon Mercado and Powers each sank a pair of free throws to get the margin back to six. James Madison cut it to three on a pair of Andre Nation free throws with 21 seconds left and stole the ball on the ensuing possession, but Ron Curry missed a three-pointer and Jasper Williams iced the game with a free throw. Hampton made the game close with its struggles at the line. The Pirates finished 14 of 28 from the stripe. Rayshawn Goins had 18 for James Madison (7-8), who was playing its third game in six days, all of which came on the road. It concluded its five-game road trip with a 3-2 record, sweeping games against San Jose State and San Diego at the Vegas Holiday Hoops tournament, then winning at Old Dominion before falling at Georgia State on Saturday. Hampton led 30-29 at halftime. The margin could have been greater, but the Pirates missed eight of their 13 free throw attempts. The Dukes weren't much better, going 5-10 at the stripe in the first half.
