Freshman guard Deron Powers scored 10 points over the final 7:12, lifting Hampton over Coppin State 59-53 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game Monday at the Physical Education Complex in Baltimore. Powers finished with 14 points for the Pirates (8-13, 5-3 MEAC), who have won three in a row since stopping a three-game losing streak in late January. Junior swingman Du'Vaughn Maxwell added 10 points and 12 rebounds for Hampton. Junior guard Andre Armstrong scored 15 points to lead the Eagles (5-19, 2-7), who have lost four in a row and 10 of 12. Sophomore guard Taariq Cephas scored 12 points, and junior forward Michael Murray had 10 for Coppin State. Coppin State maintained a slim lead until midway through the first half when Hampton started an 11-2 run that put the Pirates up 23-19 with 6:55 to play in the opening period. The Eagles closed the half with a 7-1 run to take a 30-29 lead into the locker room at the break. The teams continued to trade leads in the second half. Coppin State led 42-36 when Patrick Cole scored with 12:50 to play. Hampton went up 50-48 on two free throws by Powers with 6:09 to go and never relinquished the lead.
