Guardado in as Ochoa, Vela miss out on Mexico squad

Carlos Vela and Guillermo Ochoa are not in Mexico’s squad for next month’s crucial World Cup qualifiers against Honduras and the United States.

The in-form Vela, who starred in Real Sociedad's UEFA Champions League playoff victory at Lyon earlier this week, has consistently turned down call-ups to El Tri since last featuring in March 2011, but the omission of Ochoa’s name comes as the major surprise.

The former Club America goalkeeper has started the season in sensational form, helping Ajaccio to an unlikely 1-1 tie last Sunday against Paris Saint-Germain. It was assumed Ochoa would be seriously challenging Jesus Corona’s starting spot in goal for the two vital games.

Left midfielder Andres Guardado is in the squad, after being left out of a list Valencia released of its international call-ups.

Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez is also included, despite not having played a competitive game since Mexico’s 2-1 win over Japan in the Confederations Cup on June 22 and David Moyes confirming Friday that he will miss Monday’s game against Chelsea.

The full list of Mexico’s Europe-based players to face Honduras in Mexico City on Sept. 6 and the United States on Sept. 10 in Columbus, Ohio, is as follows: Giovani Dos Santos, Javier Aquino, Hector Moreno, Hector Herrera, Diego Reyes, Hernandez and Guardado.
