Guardado out of Honduras, USA qualifiers?

Valencia’s Andres Guardado, a staple of the Mexican national team over recent years, looks set to miss out on a call-up for El Tri’s vital World Cup qualifiers next month against Honduras and the United States.

The 26-year-old former Atlas player doesn’t appear on Valencia’s list of players set to join up with their respective national teams, which the Spanish club released on Thursday.

The list does include Portuguese internationals Ricardo Costa, Helder Postiga and Joao Pereira, but no Guardado.

The left midfielder played large parts of last season at left back for Valencia and missed the last bit of preseason with a right knee injury, but did come on for 11 minutes of the team's opening day victory over Malaga.

Angel Reyna has shone in the Liga MX this season and was one of the highlights of Mexico’s 4-1 victory over Ivory Coast, which Guardado missed through injury. The Veracruz man could take Guardado's place, but the recent selection of Argentina-born duo Christian Gimenez and Damian Alvarez also increases competition for places in that sector of the field.

Mexico hosts Honduras in the Estadio Azteca on Sept. 6 and plays the United States in Columbus, Ohio on Sept. 10. El Tri is in third place in the Hexagonal with just one win from six games.
