Real Salt Lake was the only team to take advantage of Monday's MLS Waiver Draft, selecting midfielder Cole Grossman, formerly of the Columbus Crew.
The draft was for out-of-contract players or players whose contract options were not exercised and are also not eligible for the league's Re-Entry Draft, which will be held in two stages on Dec. 7 and 14. Every other team passed on the chance to make selections, and the players who were not selected are now free agents, able to sign with any team in the league out of the various MLS player mechanisms.
Some of the more notable names available in the draft included Panamanian internationals Gabriel Gomez and Carlos Rodriguez; former FC Dallas Homegrown Player signings Bryan Leyva and Ruben Luna; veteran Brazilian midfielder Julio Cesar, who was an integral part of Sporting Kansas City's success; one-time top U.S. prospect and 18-year-old Charles Renken, whose career has been beset by injuries; and New York Red Bulls midfielders Jan Gunnar Solli and Teemu Tainio and young forward Corey Hertzog, who excelled on loan for USL PRO's Wilmington Hammerheads this season.
Grossman, in his second season out of Duke University, played in just 10 games, starting five and scoring one goal -- a highlight-reel blast in a 2-2 draw at Houston on Aug. 19.
