Grizzlies extend Joerger's contract

The Memphis Grizzlies signed coach Dave Joerger to a contract extension on Tuesday.

The team did not disclose terms of the deal, which comes after Joerger spoke with the Minnesota Timberwolves last week about their coaching vacancy. Joerger made a decision to remain with the Grizzlies during the past weekend.

"Following an open and honest dialogue with Dave, it became clear that Dave was fully committed to Memphis and we are committed to him," Grizzlies controlling owner Robert Pera said. "I look forward to seeing Dave build upon the foundation he helped establish over the last seven years, and we are both committed to bringing a championship to Memphis."

The Grizzlies finished with a 50-32 record in their first season under Joerger and lost in seven games to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.

After the season, the Grizzlies fired Jason Levien and Stu lash from front-office positions and it was speculated that Joerger also might be on the chopping block. But after the Timberwolves expressed interest in Joerger, an agreement was reached to keep him in Memphis.

Joerger replaced Lionel Hollins last year despite the Grizzlies winning 56 games during the regular season and reaching the Western Conference Finals in 2012-13.
