Griner first pick in WNBA draft
Three major college stars were the top three picks in Monday's WNBA draft, but it was the first overall pick that could change the look of women's professional basketball in this country.
The Phoenix Mercury selected Baylor's Brittney Griner with the top overall pick in the 2013 WNBA draft.
Griner, a 6-foot-8 center, twice was named the national player of the year, and many believe she has room to improve and could dominate the game at the next level. She finished her four-year career with the Bears with a record 18 dunks.
Griner also is the second all-time scorer in women's NCAA history, with 3,283 points. She is the top shot-blocker ever, breaking both the men's and women's college marks with 748.
Griner joins a talented Mercury squad that includes Diana Taurasi.
Delaware's Elena Delle Donne went second in the draft to the Chicago Sky, and Notre Dame point guard Skylar Diggins went third overall to the Tulsa Shock.
Tayler Hill of Ohio State was the fourth selection, going to the Washington Mystics, and Kelsey Bone of Texas A&M was the fifth overall pick, taken by the New York Liberty.
