Green Bay Packers Lose Preseason Opener to San Diego Chargers: Fan’s Take

Yahoo Contributor Network

The Green Bay Packers completed their first preseason game of the 2012-13 NFL season with a 21-13 loss to the San Diego Chargers on August 9, 2012. The Packers never led at any point. More players were added to an already lengthy injury report.

Here are some of the positives and negatives from that contest.

Desmond Bishop

Desmond Bishop was carried off the field after he suffered a knee and hamstring injury in the first quarter. Chargers running back Ronnie Brown appeared to have landed on Bishop's lower right leg. Second-year linebacker D.J. Smith may get a long look at inside linebacker with A.J. Hawk.

Davon House

Davon House has an opportunity to become a significant contributor in the secondary. House had a pass deflection in a one-on-one situation during the first quarter. He also had four tackles, one of which was a great open-field tackle in the backfield. Good tackling is critical in a defense that relies on their cornerbacks in run-defense.

House couldn't remain healthy in 2011. That problem continued. House suffered a shoulder injury while he was covering a punt during the third quarter.

Nick Perry

The Packers need Nick Perry to compliment Clay Matthews as a productive pass-rush specialist. Perry made a strong impression with a sack during the opening series. He was penalized for a controversial unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

James Starks

James Starks had five carries for 16 yards. Starks had a drop on the Packers' first offensive possession. He also fumbled deep in his team's territory. Marc Tyler looks like a candidate for the practice squad.

Graham Harrell

Graham Harrell had a below-average performance. Harrell completed 15-of-27 passes for 135 yards and one touchdown. A few of his completions were behind the receiver. Harrell kept overthrowing the deep ball. He settled down after a 3-for-9 start in the first half.

Summary

The Packers appeared like a team who must eliminate the rust from a lengthy offseason. The offense and special teams combined for three giveaways in the first quarter. Although there was better tackling from the defense, they were still surrendering big-yardage passing plays. The special-teams coverage units were solid. Chargers linebacker Melvin Ingram exploited the Packers' lack of depth at offensive tackle.

Packers enthusiasts shouldn't worry. Even if Bishop is out for an extended period of time, Smith showed a lot of upside during his rookie season. The Packers have three preseason games to straighten things out.

Next Up

The Packers will host the Cleveland Browns on August 16. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Central Daylight Time (CDT).
