The New Orleans Saints have thrilled NFL fans in the Big Easy for six decades. Although the early Saints teams struggled, fans still have fond memories of their favorite teams from each decade. From wild card berths and division titles to playoff runs and a Super Bowl championship, Saints fans have a lifetime of great memories.
Take a look back at the greatest New Orleans Saints team of each decade.
1960s: 1969 (5-9)
I'm sure the haters think it's funny that the best New Orleans team of this decade went 5-9. But many of them cheer for teams that have never won a Super Bowl, so it's all right. The 1969 Saints won five of their last eight games and had the third-ranked NFL offense.
1970s: 1979 (8-8)
The first Saints team I was old enough to follow was the best team of the decade. In fact, 1979 was New Orleans' first non-losing season. A little known fact about the 1979 Saints is that they were the first team in franchise history to outscore its opponents (by 10 points).
1980s: 1987 (12-3)
After a tough loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Jim Mora delivered his famous "woulda coulda shoulda" speech. From that point on, the Saints won nine straight games. In its third decade, New Orleans earned its first ever winning season and playoff berth in 1987.
1990s: 1991 (11-5)
Although the 1992 squad went 12-4, I chose the 1991 Saints as the team of the decade because they won the first division title in history. The return of QB Bobby Hebert brought respectability back to the offense while the defense allowed the fewest points in the NFL.
2000s: 2009 (13-3)
I've never experienced anything in my life like the 2009 New Orleans Saints season. In a decade of several great teams, the 2009 team topped them all by winning Super Bowl 44. I will be eternally thankful that I was alive and in New Orleans to experience it.
2010s: 2011 (13-3)
Just two years later, New Orleans matched the most regular season wins in club history. Besides winning the NFC South, 2011 will be remembered for Drew Brees breaking Dan Marino's passing record. Hopefully, this article will get outdated by New Orleans winning a Super Bowl this decade.
