Yahoo Contributor Network

Are you headed to New York's Saratoga Region with your family this winter? If so, you may want to pack your snowshoes. The region is home to miles of snowshoeing trails and other recreational opportunities. With that said, here's a quick look at a handful of places worth visiting:

Saratoga Spa State Park

Saratoga County's Saratoga Spa State Park is an excellent place to go snowshoeing. Snowshoe rentals, year round lodging, restaurants and a warming hut are available onsite. The park is also home to a theater, a performing arts center, museums, mineral baths and a spa. Ice skating rinks and cross-country skiing trails are located on premise too.

Moreau Lake State Park

Saratoga County's Moreau Lake State Park features more than 14 miles of trails and picnic areas. The park offers snowshoe rentals for a modest fee. Seasoned trekkers may want to contemplate exploring the 5.66 mile long Western Ridge Trail. Other paths worth exploring include the Lakeside Trail and the Nature Trail. Cross-country skiing and ice fishing are also permissible within the confines of the park. Downhill skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing opportunities are available nearby at the West Mountain Ski Area.

Grafton Lakes State Park

Rensselaer County's Grafton Lakes State Park features miles of snowshoeing trails, several bodies of water, picnic areas and restrooms. Snowshoe rentals are available onsite. Routes to contemplate exploring are the Shaver Pond Trail and the Long Pond Trail. Ice skating, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and ice fishing opportunities are also available onsite. Additional snowshoeing trails are located nearby at the Pineridge Cross-Country Ski Area. The ski area offers snowshoe rentals and opportunities for evening snowshoeing sessions.

Mine Kill State Park

Schoharie County's Mine Kill State Park features more than 6 miles of trails, a waterfall, picnic areas and restrooms. I'd suggest that visitors consider exploring the 3.55 mile long Long Path. Snowshoe rentals are not available on premise. Therefore, visitors should plan accordingly. Other winter activities on offer include snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. The best time to visit is in December during the area's Festival of Trees.

John Boyd Thacher State Park

Albany County's John Boyd Thacher State Park features more than 12 miles of trails, snowshoe rentals, waterfalls, picnic areas and winter programs. Snowshoe rental fees start at $5 per person. The facility is also located near Thompson's Lake State Park. Routes to consider exploring are the School House Trail and the Fred Schroeder Memorial Trail. One of the best times to visit is in January when the park hosts weekly snowshoe walks.
