Are you planning on visiting Northern Pennsylvania with your family this winter? If so, you may want to consider investing in a few pairs of ice skates. The region is home to several state parks that offer outdoor ice skating opportunities. Here's a quick rundown on a handful of them:
Chapman State Park
Warren County's Chapman State Park features a 68-acre lake and a 120' x 80' ice skating rink. Ice skating is not permissible on the lake. One of the nice things about this park is that the rink is traditionally lit up at night. There is also a warming hut, heated restrooms and a picnic area located onsite. In my opinion, the best time to visit the park is in January during the Annual Winterfest. The park's staff is predicted to host a figure skating presentation and offer ice skating lessons at the next Winterfest. Additional festival details are available online.
Cook Forest State Park
Clarion County's Cook Forest State Park features a maintained ice skating pond. The pond is located on River Road and is usually lit up at night. Families will need to bring their own ice skating equipment, portable warming stations and sundries. Picnic tables and restrooms are available onsite.
Parker Dam State Park
Parker Dam State Park is located in Clearfield County. It features a 20-acre lake, picnic tables, charcoal grills and heated restrooms. The park's staff maintains the ice skating area and monitors the ice thickness. Thus, families may want to check out the lake's ice thickness on the park's website before heading out for the day. Admission is free and families should plan on bringing their own ice skates.
Black Moshannon State Park
Centre County's Black Moshannon State Park is home to Black Moshannon Lake. The 250-acre lake is suitable for ice skating. Families seeking to ice skate on the lake should make a bee line to Boating Area 1. The park's staff is known to periodically monitor the lake's ice thickness in that area. Ice skate rentals are not available onsite. There are, however, picnic tables available on premise. Families will also want to bring their own portable charcoal grills.
Lyman Run State Park
Lyman Run State Park is located in Potter County. It features a 45-acre lake, charcoal grills, picnic tables and restrooms. The park's staff does not monitor the ice skating area. Hence, families will want to take the necessary precautions and bring their own equipment. Admission is gratis. Opportunities for snowmobiling and ice fishing are also available.
