The sport of professional golf could be heading for a monster year in 2012. So far on the 2012 PGA Tour, Phil Mickelson has already won in dramatic fashion at Pebble Beach, coming from six strokes down to win the tournament by two in the final round. And he did it while playing with Tiger Woods in the final round.
Phil Mickelson Has Already Won on the Tour in 2012
Mickelson followed up his win at Pebble Beach, the 40th PGA Tour win of his career, with another great performance the next week at the Northern Trust Open. Phil didn't win the Norther Trust Open, but he lost in a dramatic three-way sudden death playoff to Bill Haas. Phil Mickelson has not played on the tour since, but he is obviously in great form.
The 2012 Honda Classic, just completed on Sunday, March 4, 2012, also had a fantastic finish. Going into the final round, Rory McIlroy was leading the tournament, and he needed to win the Honda Classic to become the #1 ranked golfer in the world. Tiger Woods started the final round a full seven strokes back.
Tiger Woods Shot a Final Round 62 at the Honda Classic
Tiger came out firing on Sunday, and kept making shots and puts all day. He shot a -8 under 62, the lowest final round score of his career. That included making a birdie on 17, and making an eagle on 18 on the PGA National Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida where the Honda Classic is held.
Rory McIlroy Won the Honda Classic and is the #1 Golfer in the World
With his great round, Tiger Woods put a lot of pressure on Rory McIlroy, and the 2011 U.S. Open Champion was up to the challenge. McIlory fired a -1 under in the final round to win the Honda Classic by two strokes over Tigers Woods and Tom Gillis. The win made Rory McIlroy the #1 ranked player in golf.
Even though Tiger Woods did not win the Honda Classic, he's obviously back and playing in great form. Any player who shoots a 62 in the final round of a tournament in 2012 is a big threat to win any tournament this year.
So as golf heads to its first major tournament in 2012 with the Masters in early April, we have the three biggest players in golf playing in great form. Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy have already won on the PGA Tour in 2012, and Tiger Woods just fired a 62 in his last round of golf played.
With Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy All Playing Great, Golf Could Have a Monster Year in 2012
If Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy can all play great golf this year and compete against each other for tournament and major wins, golf could be in for a monster year. I've been a golfer and a big time golf fan since I was a kid in the 1970's. I'm really hoping and looking forward to golf having a monster year in 2012.
