|World Player of the Week |
Perhaps it was the impending return of Lionel Messi or merely his fresh legs after the winter break, but whatever the reason, Alexis Sanchez started 2014 with a bang Sunday.
The 25-year-old - so often a peripheral figure at Camp Nou last season - has become a dangerous weapon in Barcelona's arsenal and again showcased his pedigree with a match-winning display in a 4-0 win.
Goal's Adrian Boullosa said: "Alexis Sanchez scored an amazing hat trick during the clash between Barcelona and Elche at Camp Nou. The Chile forward, who made his 14th appearance in La Liga, played a key role in the triumph in the Blaugrana's first match of 2014 before Messi's return (expected against Atletico on the next matchday). The 25-year-old has reached a new level this season thanks to Gerardo Martino."
