Giants WR Nicks fractures foot in practice

Giants WR Hakeem Nicks fractured the fifth metatarsal of his right foot during OTAs on Thursday morning, the team announced.

The injury occurred early in practice when Nicks was running a route during individual drills.

Nicks will undergo surgery on Friday and have a screw inserted into the broken bone. His expected recovery time is approximately 12 weeks. The Giants are to report to training camp on July 26,

In 15 games last season, Nicks had 76 catches for a career-high 1,192 yards and seven touchdowns. He has 24 touchdowns in three seasons.

The Giants also announced that CB Brian Witherspoon tore his ACL in Wednesday’s OTA workout. It’s the second year in a row he has torn his ACL. Last year, Witherspoon tore it in a preseason game against the Bears.

The Giants waived/injured Witherspoon and signed DB Dante Hughes. The sixth-year veteran tried out for the team at rookie minicamp. In 53 regular-season games, Hughes has 81 tackles, one interception and five passes defensed. Hughes was with the Chargers the past three seasons.
