Giants WR Cruz: Contract talks 'in right direction'

The SportsXchange

New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz told ESPN New York on Monday that contract extension talks between his agent and the team are positive.

"I was excited to hear this weekend that contract talks are moving in the right direction," he said. "I heard there was some progress on the structure."

Cruz is in the final year of a $540,000 contract and will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season if a new deal is not completed by then.

Cruz is reportedly hoping for a long-term contract to stay with the Giants, but said he is not focused on that.

"It's not on my mind," Cruz said last week. "I have no clue when it's going to get done. I'm just playing football right now. I just want to continue to play football and worry about that later."

He had a breakout season last year in which he caught 82 passes for 1,536 yards with nine touchdowns as the Giants won the Super Bowl. Cruz has followed up this year with 52 catches for 650 yards with seven touchdowns in eight games.

"I just kind of block it out," Cruz said. "I'm just out here enjoying the moment, enjoying times. I still feel like I'm out here as (an undrafted) free agent just still trying to work hard every time I'm on the practice field, every time on game day.

"I'm just continuing to be my same person, just continuing to keep my family close. And I think that's really helped me."
