Buzzing on Yahoo Sports:

Giants tie record by using 11 pitchers in loss

The SportsXchange

If San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy desires, he can be like a mad scientist with his pitching staff.

Tuesday night, to some degree, he was.

In an 8-6 loss in 11 innings, he used 11 pitchers, which tied a major league record and set a franchise record. The Giants also tied a team record by using 25 players.

Starter Ryan Vogelsong was pulled after 3 1/3 innings. The laundry list of relievers got summoned by Bochy:

Dan Otero (1 2/3 innings), Shane Loux (one inning), Jose Mijares (one inning), Jean Machi (one-third of an inning), Jeremy Affeldt (zero innings), Santiago Casilla (two-thirds of an inning), Sergio Romo (two innings), George Kontos (one-third of an inning), Javier Lopez (one-third of an inning) and Guillermo Mota (one-third of an inning).

It was the second time an NL team used 11 pitchers in an extra-inning game. The only other time: the Cardinals in 14 innings in a 2007 game against the Phillies.

Tuesday, Bochy might have used more if the Giants tied it in the 11th. After the Diamondbacks scored twice in their half of the inning, the Giants' first two hitters reached base in the bottom of the 11th but advanced no farther.

A lot of effort and manpower for an extra-inning loss.

The only unused relievers: Dan Runzler and Brad Penny.
