Giants sign RB Hillis
With the New York Giants' depth at running back thin, the team signed veteran Peyton Hillis on Wednesday.
Hillis was one of a group of running backs, including ex-Giants Ryan Torain and Danny Ware, who worked out for the team this week.
The Denver Broncos' seventh-round pick in 2008, Hillis was traded to the Cleveland Browns after the 2009 season.
He enjoyed a breakout season in 2010, rushing for 1,177 yards and 11 touchdowns on 270 carries. He added 477 yards and two touchdowns on 61 receptions.
Since then, Hillis has been unable to come close to matching his 2010 production. He left the Browns as a free agent after the 2011 season and spent a year with the Kansas City Chiefs.
This year, he was briefly with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but did not appear in a game.
"I firmly believe I never had too much of an opportunity after I left Cleveland," Hillis said in a statement released by the team. "I was behind Jamaal Charles at Kansas City. I didn't get too much playing time.
"I'm just here to do whatever I can to help the team win. I think that this is a good team that can turn it around."
The Giants were in need of running back help with starter Brandon Jacobs nursing a hamstring strain that kept him out of Monday's practice. Da'Rel Scott was waived/injured on Tuesday.
