Giants: Free agency snapshot

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Not that anyone needed confirmation from New York Giants' management, but the offensive line will be a top priority in the coming months.

The patchwork unit, which saw seven different starting combinations in 2013 and allowed a total of 40 sacks this season, is such a mess that it could potentially be looking at four new starters in 2014.

Longtime starters Chris Snee and David Diehl have not only seen their health decline -- both dealt with injuries last year that required surgeries -- neither has played recently at a level that reminds anyone of their respective primes.

Center David Baas, who has dealt with one injury after another since signing with the Giants in 2011, had multiple surgeries in 2013. He also had a neck issue earlier in the 2013 season that resolved itself, but which could be a concern moving forward if it should flare up again.

Left tackle Will Beatty did not have a good season after supposedly playing around with his technique. He also suffered a broken leg in the regular-season finale that necessitated surgery, though the good news is that he didn't suffer any ligament damage.

While he's expected to be ready for the 2014 season, his recovery from the injury could delay his training and his offseason work.

Another unit that is a major mess is the running back spot. Brandon Jacobs announced his retirement after undergoing cartilage replacement in his left knee.

Andre Brown is a UFA whose injury history and late-season performance decline is troublesome, and Michael Cox didn't get a chance to show enough in game situations.

Peyton Hillis looked promising, but he's probably no longer a starter at this point in his career.

At fullback, John Conner proved to be a solid pickup, so much so that the team signed him to a two-year contract instead of the usual one-year rental that was the norm for players acquired mid-season.

However, Conner will likely have to compete with Henry Hynoski if the former starter, a restricted free agent, re-signs with the team and shows that he hasn't lost any explosiveness or strength resulting from significant knee and shoulder injuries requiring surgeries.
