Giants' Coach Tom Coughlin is the Best in the Business: Fan's Take

Yahoo Contributor Network

I'm just going to come right out and say it. I'm a huge fan of New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin. As you can go back and read, I was on board when the team gave him a contract extension in June. However, for some reason, some football fans don't see it my way. They'll point to late-season swoons and home playoff losses in 2005 and 2008 by the Giants as signs of poor coaching -- I don't buy it. So, if you're not a believer, let me try to convince you that Coughlin is the best at what he does.

Coaching Giant -- In his eight seasons as Big Blue's head coach, Coughlin has guided the team to five playoff births, two NFC East titles and two Super Bowl titles. His overall record of 74-54 includes six straight seasons without a losing record, the team's longest such streak since 1954-63. Furthermore, he ranks third in all-time wins in franchise history, only three behind legendary coach Bill Pacells.

Road Warrior -- Coughlin has seven postseason road wins and two neutral-site Super Bowl victories for a total of nine playoff victories away from home. His seven road playoff wins are tied with Hall of Famer Tom Landry for most in NFL history. Furthermore, led by Coughlin, the Giants have won an NFL-record seven consecutive playoff games away from home (five road, two neutral). There's nothing more difficult than winning on the road in the NFL playoffs and Coughlin makes it look easy.

Best of the Best -- With three Super Bowl victories as a head coach, New England Patriots sideline boss Bill Belichick is considered by many football fans to be the best in the business. He has the most wins of any active coach with 194. However, Coughlin has defeated Belichick in the Super Bowl twice and is 3-1 against him in the regular season. Furthermore, among active coaches, Coughlin ranks third in victories (154) and is tied with Belichick for most postseason victories with 12.

You still may not think Coughlin is the best coach in the NFL, but you have to admit one thing -- he's the right coach for the New York Giants.
