George Mason junior guard Sherrod Wright scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Patriots beat Towson 77-67 Wednesday at the Towson Center in a matchup of two of the top three teams in the Colonial Athletic Association. Towson (10-11, 5-2 CAA) got 18 points from Rafriel Guthrie and 16 points and eight rebounds from Jerelle Benimon, but a late surge by the Patriots put the game out of reach. George Mason (12-7, 4-2) got 16 points from Bryon Allen, a junior guard from Largo, Md. "They are the deepest team in the league," Towson coach Pat Skerry said Tuesday of Mason. Wright has scored at least 20 points in nine of his past 11 games. Mason led 41-34 at halftime, but Towson's Bilal Dixon (six points, 14 rebounds) made two free throws with 17:25 left in the game to pull the Tigers to within 43-42. The Patriots later extended the lead to 47-42 lead on a basket by Jonathan Arledge. The Patriots led 68-61 before a basket by Guthrie cut their deficit to 68-63 with 2:45 to go. Benimon made one of two free throws with 1:25 left to slice the lead to 69-65. Allen made a basket with 57 seconds left to make it 71-65, and Wright hit two free throws with 36 seconds left to make it 73-65. A Mason basket with 32 seconds left to put the game out of reach at 75-65. Towson was coming off a 71-69 loss at home Monday to Georgia State, while Mason won at home Saturday against Hofstra. "We are still a work in progress," Skerry said Tuesday. "We are light years from where we were" last year when the Tigers were 1-31. NOTES: Towson plays Saturday at William & Mary, while Mason plays Sunday at Northeastern. ... Benimon entered the game with 15 double-doubles this season, the most in the nation. He had doubles-doubles in his past six games before Wednesday ... Wright was the top scorer for Mason in 15 of the team's first 18 games.
