New York manager Joe Girardi could be without a key cog in the offense for the rest of the regular season as the Yankees make their push toward a spot in the postseason. An MRI on outfielder Brett Gardner revealed a Grade 1 strain of his left oblique and Girardi discussed the loss of Gardner as if he will miss some significant time. "Ribcages don't heal very quickly," Girardi told USA Today on Friday. "But I think sometimes it depends on the individual, too. It's not like it's just a few days. Is it possible it could be the rest of the year? Yeah." Gardner left Thursday's win over the Baltimore Orioles with an injured rib. He is batting .273 with eight home runs and 52 RBIs. Gardner will to rejoin the Yankees on Sunday, but he won't be available to play, although Girardi did say there's a chance Gardner could be used as a pinch runner before he is available to hit. But even that might be weeks away.
