The Sarnia Sting took forward Alex Galchenyuk with their first-overall pick in the OHL’s priority selection on Saturday.

Forward Brendan Gaunce, the younger brother of Mississauga-St. Michael’s Majors all-star defenceman Cameron Gaunce, was taken second-overall by the Belleville Bulls. The Oshawa Generals rounded out the top three by selecting Toronto Marlboros forward Scott Laughton with the third pick.

Galchenyuk, a 16-year-old from Milwaukee, dominated the U.S. Tier 1 Midget League, scoring 87 points (44 goals, 43 assists) in 38 games for the Chicago Young Americans. He finished 33 points ahead of the league runner-up. The six-foot-one, 180-pound forward will be the fourth American to go No. 1 in the OHL draft, joining Pat Peake (1990), Patrick O'Sullivan (2001) and Rob Schremp (2002).
