Galaxy-Rapids Preview

AP - Sports

Former teammates Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle could both reach milestones this weekend if they can break out of their poor scoring form.

Both are in search of record goals Saturday night when Donovan and the Los Angeles Galaxy visit Buddle's Colorado Rapids.

These 32-year-old stars first joined MLS in 2001 and are among the top eight scorers in league history.

Donovan is still seeking his first goal this season, which would give him 135 in MLS and break a tie with Jeff Cunningham for the most in the league.

Buddle can become the eighth player in league history to reach 100 goals, but he has found the back of the net just once.

"It'd be good for him (Donovan) to get the record out of the way, so that people aren't talking about it as much," Buddle told the Rapids' official website. "And for myself, the same, just to get to that 100 mark and move on, and slowly get more goals."

Buddle enjoyed his best seasons during his time with Los Angeles from 2007-12. He led the Galaxy with 17 MLS goals in 2010, and was acquired by Colorado (3-2-2) on Dec. 14, 2012.

Buddle missed the first meeting against his former club last season with a groin injury as Colorado fell 1-0 on March 23, 2013. He had a goal and an assist as the Rapids posted victories in the next two matchups to end the Galaxy's 5-0-1 run in the series.

Los Angeles (2-1-2) was severely short-handed in last year's season series. Donovan, captain Robbie Keane and defender Omar Gonzalez missed all three meetings for various reasons, mostly because the games fell during national team duty for them.

The Galaxy will see another familiar face this weekend in Rapids coach Pablo Mastroeni, who played nine games for them last season after coming over from Colorado.

Donovan likes what he has seen from the first-year coach.

"I think they have done a very good job under Pablo," Donovan told the league's official website. "They've gone on the road and gotten some very good results against good teams, and I think they've been pretty good at home. I think when he has time to help shape and mold the team the way he wants, they're going to get even better."

Los Angeles has not played since a 2-2 draw at Vancouver on April 19.

The Galaxy have played the fewest games in MLS and are allowing an average of 0.80 goals for the league's best mark. Keane has scored four of their seven goals to help pick up the slack for Donovan's lack of production.

The Rapids will try to recover after last Saturday's 4-1 loss at Seattle.

Dillon Serna had the lone goal in his second career start, becoming the first homegrown player in club history to score. The Colorado native figures to be in line for his first home start Saturday.
