The Los Angeles Galaxy fell to the Seattle Sounders, 2-0, on May 2 at CenturyLink Field. The loss was the first ever for the Galaxy in Seattle. It was also the first loss in five MLS matches for our side.
To be honest, I didn't expect a win or even a draw from the Galaxy before the match began. L.A. after all did not have starters David Beckham, Todd Dunivant, Robbie Keane and goalkeeper Josh Saunders in the lineup. That meant there were plenty of lineup changes, including rookie defender Bryan Gaul's first start of his MLS career. Part of the reason that the older starters, besides Saunders who is out for personal reasons, were missing is the artificial surface in Seattle. Our side struggled on the turf and had problems managing shots on target.
The Sounders just looked like the quicker and better side for the first hour and by the time the Galaxy settled in, the damage was done. It was really a shame that an excellent performance in net from Bill Gaudette filled with acrobatic saves was wasted in the loss. On the first goal, Mauro Rosales crossed into the area and found Eddie Johnson. Johnson had beaten A.J. DeLaGarza and headed the ball hard off of the turf which seemed to give Gaudette trouble in judging the bounce as the ball went by him. On the second goal, Fredy Montero unleashed a shot from 35 yards that found its way over Gaudette's hand and into the net. It is hard to fault Gaudette on either goal, especially Montero's strike which should win goal of the week.
The Galaxy have more defeats than victories this season. However, it could be worse. Toronto FC doesn't have any points this season. Even with the loss, the Galaxy have still gotten 70% of their points this season in the last five matches. Next up for our side is the New York Red Bulls on Saturday at The Home Depot Center. The Galaxy should have all the starters but Saunders back while New York will be without leading scorer Thierry Henry.
