Major League Soccer announced that the fan vote for the 2012 MLS All-Star Game will open on June 8 at noon Eastern time. A panel of members of the media nominated the top six players from each MLS team (a total of 114 players) for the fan ballot. Fans can vote using the ballot at the MLS website or by texting a player's first and last name to 22442. Voting via Twitter will run from June 21 to June 22.
Even though the 2012 season has not gone to plan for the Los Angeles Galaxy, fans can still use the fan vote to get players from our side on the roster.
Here are the Galaxy players on the ballot:
Goalkeeper: Josh Saunders
Defender: Todd Dunivant
Forward: Robbie Keane
All six of these players from our side will be eligible to be in the First XI. The top 11 players in combined voting totals from online, text and Twitter votes will be named to the First XI. The player with the most text votes will earn an automatic spot in the First XI. These selections will be unveiled on July 8 at halftime of the Chicago Fire match against the Galaxy.
Thirty-two players (4 goalkeepers, 8 defenders, 13 midfielders and 7 forwards) in total will be selected for the MLS All-Star team due to the collective bargaining agreement. Beyond the fan vote, the MLS commissioner also gets to name two All-Stars and MLS players will select the rest of the team. Peter Nowak, head coach of the Philadelphia Union, will be coaching the All-Stars and will pick the gameday lineup.
If Landon Donovan makes the All-Star roster, it will be his record 12th All-Star selection. The All-Star Game itself will be played on July 25 at PPL Park in Chester, Pennsylvania. The MLS All-Stars will square off against English Premier League power Chelsea. The match will be the second time the MLS All-Stars meet Chelsea. The MLS All-Star side won at Toyota Park in 2006, 1-0, on a goal by Dwayne De Rosario.
