During the 2012 MLS season, there have been some beautiful goals. Now, 64 of the best are up for the Goal of the Year. The nominees include long range stunners and short range flicks. Many of the contenders display amazing feats of athleticism, technical skill and teamwork. Of course, I'm happy because the Los Angeles Galaxy are well represented in this competition. Perhaps, one of them will take the Goal of the Year honor.
How it Works
The 64 goals are made up of the "31 winners of the AT&T Goal of the Week plus 33 goals chosen by a panel of MLSsoccer.com's editorial staff." In the first round, there will be 16 groups with four goals in each group. From Oct. 31-Nov. 7, there will be an online vote and the top two from each group "will advance to the Second Round." In the second round, there will be 32 goals divided into eight groups. From Nov. 9-12., there will be another online vote with the top two from each group advancing. The Round of 16 (voting from Nov. 14-21) will use both text and online voting to decide the final four. Finally, the Goal of the Year will be determined from text and online voting from Nov. 24-27.
The Galaxy Candidates
Since 31 of the 64 nominees are comprised of GOTW winners, I know that David Beckham has at least four goals in the competition. Two of those goals were scored in the run of play and the other two were scored off of free kicks. Homegrown talent Jose Villarreal will also be on the ballot for his rocket against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Robbie Keane is a contender for his clinical volley shot in L.A.'s 2-1 loss to Real Salt Lake. I imagine that Juninho will have at least one goal on the ballot. The Brazilian midfielder was nominated for the goal of the week several times but never took the honor.
The First Round
Currently, groups one through four are available for voting. Beckham's free kick against the Whitecaps is in group one. Marcelo Sarvas' follow up blast against the Colorado Rapids is in Group 2 and Keane's volley is in group four. Looking through the goals, it's a tough choice. For groups 1-4, voting is open until 11:59 pm PT on Nov. 1.
