The Los Angeles Galaxy fell to the Carolina RailHawks, 2-1, on May 29 at WakeMed Soccer Park in the Third Round of the U.S. Open Cup.
It was a rough night from a physical standpoint for the Galaxy's reserves. Hector Jimenez was injured when he clashed knees with a RailHawks player. Chad Barrett had to leave with what looked like a cramp. David Junior Lopes also took a couple of knocks but stayed in the match for the full 90 minutes. One of those knocks was with teammate Bryan Gaul, who left the game with his eye swollen shut after a collision with a RailHawks player and then Lopes in the penalty area in the 71st minute.
Before Jimenez left in the 44th minute and Barrett left in the 65th minute, they helped Pat Noonan get the Galaxy on the board first in the 38th minute. Jimenez stole a ball and passed it up to Chad Barrett who slid it over to Noonan in the area. Noonan confidently fired it past RailHawks keeper Ray Burse.
Ty Shipalane tied the match with a great stepover move in the area to get by Jimenez' sub, Bryan Jordan, and then shot over a diving Bill Gaudette in the 75th minute. The goal was another frustrating moment for our side's defense which has been unable to shutout any team in any competition in 2012. Unfortunately, it got worse for L.A.'s defense. Shipalane, the RailHawks' supersub on the night, used his speed and his stepover to blow by Jordan again in the 88th minute and crossed over to Brian Shriver who headed the ball at the midsection of Gaudette. Gaudette couldn't catch the ball as he fell backwards and it trickled across the goal line to give Shriver the game-winner. Another RailHawks sub, Jason Garey, had a chance to score Carolina's second goal four minutes earlier but missed on his one-on-one breakaway against Gaudette.
For the third time in a row, the Galaxy blew a lead in a match and lost. The inability to close out matches in 2012 has been maddening to say the least.
