The Los Angeles Galaxy played to a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in an international friendly on July 24 at the Home Depot Center.
Our side had to do without Designated Players David Beckham and Landon Donovan who both skipped the friendly to play in the 2012 MLS All-Star Game on July 25. Former Tottenham striker and current Galaxy Designated Player Robbie Keane played the first half but could not find the net against his old side despite two good chances.
The Spurs got on the scoreboard first on Gareth Bale's header in the 17th minute. Bale was able to beat Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez in the air on a Gylfi Sigurdsson cross which was sent into the penalty area. Bale played the ball up and over Brian Perk who was caught a little off his line. The Galaxy responded at the half hour mark with a goal by defender David Junior Lopes. Lopes was the beneficiary of some great passing play from our side. Marcelo Sarvas crossed the ball into the area behind the defense to Hector Jimenez who played the ball along the ground to an unmarked Lopes who slid and knocked the ball past Tottenham keeper Carlo Cudicini.
After the half, managers for both squads made plenty of changes. The action from the first half did not carry over and there were only missed chances for both sides. Tottenham definitely looked like a team in preseason form and the Galaxy reserves held their own against them in the second half in preserving the draw.
Two players were not used by Galaxy manager Bruce Arena: midfielder Juninho and goalkeeper Josh Saunders. However, Chad Barrett, Andrew Boyens, Mike Magee and Pat Noonan were able to play. Central defender Omar Gonzalez, who is still working his way back to full match fitness following ACL surgery, played more than sixty minutes. The goal for Lopes was his first in a Galaxy uniform.
The Galaxy's next match is on July 28 against FC Dallas. Beckham will not be available as he will play an undisclosed role in the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.
