G Fasth signs two-year extension

The SportsXchange

A fast start has resulted in a contract extension for Anaheim goaltender Viktor Fasth.

The rookie, who hasn't lost a game he has started this season, signed a a two-year, $5.8 million contract extension Wednesday with the Ducks, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Under terms of the deal, the 30-year-old Fasth will make $2.4 million in 2013-14 and $3.4 million in 2014-15. He had signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Ducks last May.

With Fasth in goal, the Ducks are 8-0-0. He's the third goalie to win eight or more games without a loss at the start of an NHL career, joining Ram Emery of Ottawa (2003-05) and Bob Froese of Philadelphia (1982-83). Fasth's eight victories also are tied for the league lead.

Fasth, who twice won the Honken Trophy as the outstanding goalie in Sweden, had spent much of his career in lower-level Swedish leagues. Expected to back up Jonas Hillar this season, Fasth has emerged as one of the surprises of the strike-shortened NHL season.

Fasth also is sixth in the league in goals-against average at 1.78 per game and is tied for seventh in save percentage (.933).

"Viktor has proven himself not only this year in the NHL, but the previous two seasons as the top goaltender in Sweden," Ducks general manager Bob Murray said. "We are pleased to be able to keep him and feel fortunate to have two top NHL goaltenders going forward."
