Furyk, Love Chasing Atwal in 2012 McGladrey Classic: A Fan's Take

Can Arjun Atwal Hold Off the Veterans for Second Win?

Jim Furyk and Davis Love III have combined for 36 career wins on the PGA Tour. Midway through The McGladrey Classic, Friday, October 19, 2012, they are tied at 9-under par, within one shot of the lead. Arjun Atwal, leading at 10-under par, has only one Tour victory.

    Jim Furyk

Furyk's first PGA Tour win was the 1995 Las Vegas Invitational (one year before Tiger Woods first victory in the same tournament). In the years since, Jim has claimed 15 more wins on Tour, including the 2003 U.S. Open Championship. Some readers may be surprised to learn that Jim Furyk ranks fourth on the all-time PGA Tour money list.

    Davis Love III

Davis has been a Tour winner since the 1987 MCI Heritage Golf Classic, an event he has won five times. His 20 career Tour wins include the 1997 PGA Championship. While most golf fans in the U.S. are aware that Davis Love III served as team captain in the recent Ryder Cup, they may not know he is sixth on the all-time money list.

    Arjun Atwal

A 39-year-old native of Asansol, India, and golf professional since 1995, Atwal has been on the PGA Tour since his rookie year of 2004. In 177 career events entered, he has three finishes of third place or better, claiming the 2010 Wyndham Championship as his only victory. 2012 has been a difficult season for Arjun Atwal, missing the cut in 14 of 25 events, with his best finish being a tie for 19th in the St. Jude Classic.

    What to Expect

Jim Furyk and Davis Love III have been contenders in 2012. Furyk has two runner-up finishes, while Love tied for third in the St. Jude Classic. Considering their records, career and current season, I fully expect both to finish The McGladrey Classic ahead of Arjun Atwal.

It may be harder to stay ahead of the rest of the field, with 16 more players within three shots, ranging from Hall of Fame member Vijay Singh (56 wins worldwide) to the promising rookie Bud Cauley (looking for his first win).

It should be another exciting finish, whoever hoists the trophy on Sunday, October 21st.

Harold Andrews has played golf for nearly 50 years. He considers Jack Nicklaus the greatest of all time.
