Most people are focusing on the 2012 Olympic Games happening in London, but there is still professional golf being played and that deserves some of our attention. The World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational is being held at Firestone Country Club (South Course) in Akron, Ohio. There is also an alternate field event, the Reno-Tahoe Open, being contested as well. So in between volleyball, swimming and gymnastics, here is a quick golf update.
Jim Furyk began the tournament on fire, shooting a 7-under par 63. He then continued his excellent play from the first round of the WGC Bridgestone Invitational into day two in Akron. Furyk had five birdies against only one bogey in firing a 4-under par 66. Thanks to his outstanding play, Furyk will take a two-stroke lead over Rafael Cabrera Bello into the third round. Furyk has been around the leaderboard occasionally in 2012; we will have to see if he can close out a tournament.
Like most golf fans I like to keep an eye on what Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are doing in a tournament. Tiger Woods' struggles continued. After a first round 70, Woods came out on day two and shot a 2-over par 72 to find himself 13 shots behind Jim Furyk. But hey, at least he gets to stick around and play the weekend. Like Woods, Mickelson also had an up-and-down kind of day as he finished at 1-under par for the day and even par for the tournament. This leaves him 11 shots off Furyk's pace.
Providing some stiffer competition for Furyk and Cabrera Bello on the weekend will be Louis Oosthuizen and Jason Dufner at 8-under par and 7-under par respectively. These players are more than capable of running down Furyk. Also giving chase to Furyk on the weekend will be the world's number one player, Luke Donald. Donald will enter weekend play six strokes behind Furyk.
It should make for a pretty good weekend of golf at Firestone Country Club. Since the Olympics will be on tape and the good stuff will not be aired until prime time, you might as well kick back and watch some golf this weekend. That is if you can't get out to the course!
Dwight is an avid golfer. While still relatively new to the game, he plays as often as the weather and his schedule will allow.
